Modern New Thought began with a man named Phineas Quimby who was the first to rediscover the esoteric truths hidden in the abbreviated Gospels. His experiments with Mesmerism (later to be called hypnotism) led him to some miraculous healings. It was not long before he went on to discover principles that were even more potent. Quimby despised what he called "Priestcraft," a term that has also been used by the Mormons to describe Nicolationist church bureaucracies.
